MHSCL Season October - December 2015

The Mid-Hudson Scholastic Chess League (MHSCL) launched its 14th season by holding the Kickoff Swiss tournament on November 7, 2015, at Cornwall Central High School in Cornwall, NY. Thirty-seven players participated in the event.



When the tournament ended, Stephen Decker of The Mount Academy won the tournament, winning all five games. Six players tied for second-place with 4 points (in tiebreak order) : Ella Collins of Cornwall Central HS, Carl Tyce of James O'Neill HS, Joshua Grossbohlin of Kingston HS, Uriel Calixto of Kingston HS, Gideon Shirky of The Mount Academy, and Emil Vyskocil of Cornwall Central HS.



The event was a combination of an individual and team tournament. The top four scorers of players from the same school counted as that school's team points. Prior to the last round, Cornwall Central HS and The Mount Academy each had 12 points, and Kingston 11.5 points. The Mount Academy, winning three points in the last round, won the team trophy with 15 points. Kingston leapfrogging over Cornwall Central HS, claimed the runnerup spot with 14 points, and Cornwall Central HS finished in third place with 13.5 points.



After two rounds of the match portion of the season, four teams had perfect 2-0 records. Cornwall Central HS Team One defeated Kingston Team Two and James O’Neill by 6-3 scores. The Mount Academy Team One narrowly defeated Monroe-Woodbury HS Team Two 5-4 and swept Kingston HS Team Two, 9-0. Monroe-Woodbury HS Team One defeated The Mount Academy Team Two, 8-1, and Cornwall Central HS Team Two, 7-2. Kingston HS Team One beat Roundout Valley HS, 6-3, and dominated Highland Falls Middle School, 8-1.



Rounds three and four, which will be played January 16, 2016, at the Mount Academy, will clarify the playoff picture. Cornwall Central HS Team One will play The Mount Academy Team One in the third round and. Monroe-Woodbury HS Team One will play Kingston HS Team One in round four.
